Eating up Beijing

2007 Vital Signs : Place. Kodak Eastman House, Rochester, New York.

Inspired by the ethereal beauty of classical Chinese ink paintings, with their misty, serene landscapes, this video offers a stark contrast. Filmed around midday on one of the most heavily polluted days in autumnal Beijing, the city's iconic smog dominates the scene. The thick haze is a result of airborne dust from soil erosion, compounded by industrial pollution. Beijing’s air quality deteriorates further when winds carry sand from the Gobi Desert, a problem exacerbated by deforestation and forest fires that continue to ravage the region.
